UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Alert Roster with Eleven Nations
British authorities has included an additional eleven further countries to its travel alert list about the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
This expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Just recently, authorities had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following several serious cases like the deadly death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.

"When you are having drinks abroad, choose well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer advised.
"Should anything seems unusual, such as a hangover that's way worse than usual or vision problems – get medical help right away."
