Uche Ignites Comfortable Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
