Thunder Launch Title Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Triumph

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning points late in double overtime as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 win over the visiting Rockets.

The reigning MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defense," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."

Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were presented with their championship rings.

Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some payback on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.

In other action, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was not enough to stop his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.

Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from sciatica.
