Doris Included in Ireland Team While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Returning manager the Ireland coach has included captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall Tests, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are not included due to injury, and full-back Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.
Leinster forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only new player in the 34-player group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".
After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after a break to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.
Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in two of his province's URC league matches this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city previously.
McCarthy was included in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a international appearance.
Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is poised to cover for the captain if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
