2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results tell a compelling story: a marked increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the trend in gaming seems especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.

Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
